A common refrain is, “To me, we’re all just people. I don’t see color. I don’t care if you’re black, brown, white, or purple; people are people, and talking about differences just drives us apart.” This notion is well intentioned and ironically emerges from a person’s desire to not discriminate … We are not all “just people”, we have complex identities, including race and ethnicities. We do notice differences. Statements that seek to “equalize” us all by ignoring our differences, however well-meaning, minimize and devalue the experiences of many individuals and the legacies of many groups in this country.
